The Charter Oak Difference
Aurora Charter Oak Behavioral Health Care is located on 10 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in Covina, California. Covina is about 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, in the San Gabriel Valley. The San Gabriel Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to our campus, which includes Aurora Charter Oak Hospital and the Charter Oak Recovery Center. Our campus includes eight separate units for adolescents and adults requiring inpatient care, a Residential Treatment Center (RTC), an Outpatient Services building, and an Assessment Center which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our campus also includes a pool and a gymnasium.

Aurora Charter Oak uses evidence-based, outcome-driven treatment care models, including Seeking Safety.
Seeking Safety is a highly flexible, measurable treatment approach that provides a hopeful environment conducive to positive change. Initially, Seeking Safety demonstrated positive results most notably in dealing with trauma and addiction. What has been discovered over the course of time with this approach is noticeable improvement regarding suicide risk, suicidal thoughts, social adjustment, family functioning, problem solving and depression. Seeking Safety can assist individuals in continuing with treatment after hospitalization at Aurora Charter Oak, and possibly delaying, if not preventing, re-hospitalization. Above all else, Seeking Safety emphasizes safety: in relationships, thinking, behavior and feelings. This includes discontinuing or reducing substance use, reducing suicidality, minimizing risk, minimizing mental health symptoms and increasing positive coping strategies. Seeking Safety aims to reduce negative behaviors, replacing them with healthy coping mechanisms.
At Aurora Charter Oak, individuals learn about the nature and treatment of mental illness and chemical dependency, how to prevent relapses and re-hospitalizations, and how to cope effectively with symptoms.

Aurora Charter Oak Hospital is licensed and accredited as a 134-bed psychiatric hospital providing short-term care for adolescents (ages 12-17) and adults (ages 18+) with mental health and/or substance use problems. The Charter Oak Recovery Center is licensed and accredited as a 12-bed short-term Residential Treatment Center (RTC), featuring all-private rooms, offering treatment for adults with a primary alcohol or other substance use problem. Most individuals who receive treatment at Charter Oak live in the Southern California area, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. However, we also accept referrals from other areas. We are licensed by the State of California, accredited by The Joint Commission, and certified by Medicare and Medi-Cal. In addition, we are contracted with most major health insurance companies, including Kaiser, and we are a preferred provider for several medical groups in our area.
While many treatment facilities focus on either mental health or substance use disorders, Aurora Charter Oak Hospital and the Charter Oak Recovery Center specialize in treating individuals with co-occurring conditions: both mental health and substance use problems. An example of a co-occurring disorder would be depression and alcohol dependence. Chemical dependency and mental disorders have biological, psychological and social components, all of which are addressed in our treatment programs. Each individual at our facility receives care from a treatment team that typically includes a psychiatrist, internal medicine/family practice physician, case manager/social worker, registered nurses, addiction counselor/therapist, and other behavioral health specialists. We are dedicated to providing high-quality care for individuals who are struggling with mental health, chemical dependency, or a combination of behavioral health issues. We encourage our patients and family members to take an active role in treatment, education and recovery.
