At Aurora Charter Oak Hospital, we are proud to offer flexible treatment options that support individuals with a wide range of lifestyles and responsibilities. Our Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is one of our most adaptable services, providing meaningful care that leads to lasting change and recovery. This program is also built specifically for those who need support with chemical dependency and/or mental health challenges.
Rooted in dignity, service, and individualized care, our mission is to walk alongside you every step of the way. Here, you’ll find a safe and nurturing space where healing, growth, and meaningful connection can begin.
What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
Life doesn’t stop when you’re struggling, and neither should your care. An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers more structure than weekly outpatient therapy but does not require an overnight hospital stay like inpatient treatment. It’s often used as a step-down from inpatient or Partial Hospitalization (PHP) programs or as a supportive alternative to prevent hospitalization.
What to Expect at Aurora Charter Oak’s IOP
At Aurora Charter Oak, our IOP is structured and intentional, yet flexible enough to meet you where you are. It’s designed for adults who need more than occasional therapy sessions, but who still want to live at home and stay connected to their daily routines.
When you begin IOP at Aurora Charter Oak, you’ll be welcomed into a structured, therapeutic environment that’s both supportive and personalized. Our patients attend sessions three days a week for three hours per day (Monday-Friday). This schedule allows for consistency without requiring a major disruption to your normal life and routine.
Group therapy is also a central part of the experience. We are proud to offer space for our patients to connect with other individuals on similar paths. Together, our patients also have the opportunity to explore practical tools for managing symptoms, building resilience, and navigating relationships.
In addition to group work, you’ll have access to individualized treatment planning, medication consultation if needed, and a team that truly cares about your progress.
Who Can Benefit from IOP Treatment?
Struggling with mental health or substance use can feel overwhelming and isolating, especially when life keeps moving around you. Thankfully, our Intensive Outpatient Program is designed for individuals who require additional support while still maintaining their connection to everyday life. It’s also a great fit for those who don’t require inpatient care but recognize that weekly therapy isn’t sufficient at this time.
In our Intensive Outpatient Program, we often work with adults navigating depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, past trauma, substance use, and/or a variety of other mental health disorders. Some individuals come to us after leaving a hospital or detox program. Others are seeking help for the first time. No matter where you’re starting from, you don’t have to go through it alone.
Our Evidence-Based Approach
At Aurora Charter Oak, we use proven treatment methods that are backed by research and guided by compassion. Our IOP combines clinical expertise with real-world tools to help you build lasting change.
Group therapy is a key part of the program. These sessions are rooted in evidence-based models like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Seeking Safety, and Illness Management and Recovery (IMR). You’ll also learn how to manage symptoms, cope with stress, and build healthier emotional and relational patterns.
Medication consultation and ongoing assessments are also used to ensure your care stays responsive to your needs. Every person receives a personalized treatment plan that’s adjusted over time, because healing isn’t one-size-fits-all.
Throughout the process, our team works together to support your goals, your safety, and your progress. Our approach is built on the belief that with the right support, people can and do recover.
