Aurora Charter Oak Hospital offers inpatient treatment for children and adolescents (ages 9-17) with mental health problems, as well as children and adolescents who have both a mental health and a drug/alcohol use, misuse, or unhealthy/harmful use problem. Children and adolescents are hospitalized separately from adults and have a separate lobby and waiting area. The goal of our child and adolescent program is to provide stabilization of immediate safety within a supportive and structured environment. The treatment is short-term with the primary focus being on the reduction of symptoms and overall improvement of functioning.
We strive to provide the highest quality of care to our child and adolescent patients. This is accomplished by creating a structured environment that encourages rapid recovery and a return to the community for follow-up care as needed. Our treatment approach acknowledges that each child and adolescent is their own individual and focuses on psychoeducation, building interpersonal skills, and symptom management.

Child and adolescent treatment at Aurora Charter Oak includes a comprehensive assessment, group therapy, medication management, and family involvement. We begin aftercare planning at the time of admission and provide a written plan which is developed with the participation of the child and adolescent and family. This plan includes recommendations for further treatment and follow-up appointments are scheduled as needed.
Treatment Team
We believe a team approach is the most effective method to deliver quality care. The treatment team for each child and adolescent is led by a psychiatrist and typically includes a licensed therapist, psychiatric nurse, activity/recreational therapist, mental health therapist, case manager/social worker, and chemical dependency counselors. The treatment team offers not only their clinical expertise and experience, but also their concern and compassion.
Therapy Groups and Activities
Child and adolescent patients receive four therapy groups per day, including mental health, substance use education, and recreational activity groups.
Groups are facilitated by professional healthcare staff, such as mental health therapists, chemical dependency counselors, and certified recreation therapists.
Families are scheduled for at least one family therapy session to address issues of immediate concern and plans for follow-up treatment.
